Do people backpack across central america?

Question

You always hear about people backpacking across Europe (which i also plan to do) but i was curious how safe (or unsafe) it is to do it in Central America for a caucasian American. What do you think?

consider it an extreme adventure .....cant be compared to europe,were the roads are connected by modern transportation...........and the modern cities are so close....

Extremely unsafe to do this. Friends of mine were on a bus and assaulted and left to die.This was on a bus with other people and families. Do not even think of doing this.
