  1. Yes.  There is an establish fishery for them.

If you get a chance to see the PBS special "Superfish", you'll see Mexican fisherman catching giant squid.

Edit:  Jim is a very smart guy.  Of course all you have to do is click on the link I gave.  Then you would not make undeserving comments and send idiotic messages to people.

  2. not that i know because frankly you are lucky if you ever see one in your lifetime sperm whales eat a lot of them though

  3. Nope.  The tissues of a giant squid are incredibly high in ammonia.  One researcher tried to eat some relatively fresh giant squid meat, and he couldn't even chew on it without gagging.  The ammonia helps the squid with bouyancy.

Jim, sorry.  I think you might be thinking of Humbolt squid.  They are pretty darn big, but they are NOT giant squid.

  4. NO, the ONLY FRESH sample ever seen by humans is a piece of tentacle snagged by a research expedition. Most of what we know about them has been learned from rotting carcasses that have washed ashore. I don't know where jim gets his info.

  5. no because by the time one washes ashore its already been pecked at by other creatures, thus is not safe for human consummation
