They fall in love as time goes by.. As they get to know eachother and spend more time together, there love grows and that's when they fall in love.

I think you can fall in "lust" at first sight, be so enthralled and overwhelmed by hormones you become besotted. But real love can't happen instantly. What is it they say: real, true love is knowing someones faults and flaw but loving them anyway.

People fall in love at first sight. If they get together, they fall out of love as time goes by and  try to bulid a relationship based on their realities instead; if they don't get together, they don't fall out of love as time goes by because the dream, like any dream ,not having encountered  reality,lives on.

Falling in love is based on ideal and projection, falling out of love being the result of the realization that the ideal does not conform to the reality of the other.

I think people fall in love for different reasons.  But obviously for me, in my own life, a lasting love only happens as time goes by.  When two people put enough energy and effort into each other, there is equality, and desire at a common goal.  Sometimes, love at first sight is only skin deep, and it is much harder to dig deep into another person's soul, that is if they let you.  So, in many cases love at first sight, may only be based on what can be seen and NOT what is FELT or Discovered on the inside.

You can't fall in love (by definition of what falling in love is) until you actually "know" somebody...

And you can't "know" somebody the first time you meet them...

you can be spiritually connected at the first sight and exchange a sense of comfort and inspiration. but as time passes, and two people get to know one another, they learn a different kind of appreciation for one another

I think it's possible to have a shallow sort of love at first sight, but for that love to grow into something much deeper and long-lasting there needs to be time spent in each other's company, getting to know each other really well and building a strong relationship. :-)
