Do people in Australia see kangaroos on a regular basis?

Or do they live away from houses, like in the Outback region? Are they nice or a bit difficult?

Hi I'm Australian and where I live kangaroos can sometimes be found in the bushy areas or in the forests, but because theres so much construction and clearing of trees they seem to be dissapearing.

The good thing is though that they're  NOT an extinct animal and there are lots of kangaroos all over australia.

Your also right about the outback regions as you won't see them bouncing along the coasts as they're inland animals and love the rocky, bushy lands of central australia-mostly in NORTHERN TERRITORY

Australians won't see kangaroos when they live in large cities. But when you live in the outskirts/suburbs it might be possible. Kangaroos are wild animals and they are shy. But those in wildlife parks and zoos are not that much shy and you even can hand feed them.

Yeah we see them everyday but you have to be careful the buggers are dangerous they attack humans for fun

I live in a regional/outback area and we do actually get them in the back yard (Occasionally). We have many around this area along with emu's. The Kangaroos generally stay out of backyard if there are dogs, however large ones can kill a large dog (Though rare). Kangaroos can be inquisitive and a bit of a nuisance, but the large males (6 Foot tall) can be aggressive and dangerous (But rarely). They will generally take off when you go near them, however if it is around a camping area where people feed them, they can become aggressive when it comes to food. They do live in the coastal regions too. Another interesting thing: Kangaroos are excellent swimmers, when they get chased by dogs they can swim into a river and when the dog swims after it, the roo can turn around and hold the dog under water and drown it. No. We don't see them coming out of nowhere and hopping around the city streets.

They live in the bushes and outback, away from the city.

You should leave them alone if you see them should you travel out there.

As an Australian myself, I can tell you that kangaroos are more frequently found in scrub and outback areas. The greater population of Australians live in city areas and are very laidback people.

They aren't in the cities they like plenty of grass and trees. Yes they live near houses in the country and not far from the cities you will see them in a park and golfcourse areas. plenty of wallabies but the big greys or red kangaroos you wouldn't get close to they would run away. If they thought they where being threatened they can be dangerous and box you or whip their big solid tail around which could certainly do plenty of damage.

No. Theyre only seen in the outback. They are generally shy, but can be aggressive. You will see them at nighttime hopping along the roadside and the big ones can get hit by cars and cause a lot of damage.

Yes i see them every week and when i lived in Newcastle had the visit every day it depends on where you live

Kangaroos are found hoping around the neighbourhoods..

they are generally found in the more outback, bush regions. However they can be spotted in areas such as golf courses and on some ovals in more inner suburbs area. But as a rule if you want to see a kangaroo go for a drive for half an hour out of town and you will see lots dead on the side of the road, and jumping through the fields

well i used to live in queensland and like on the schoolgrounds and stuff there were always kangaroos yeah, now i live in melbourne and i dont see them

I do, I live in outback West australia, I used to have a few  as pet when i was younger( no joke), my dad was once feeding one( in a pen) when it charged towards him and attacked him, now he has a big sdar onhis back.

To answer your question, I do, but i am one of the few people, many people live in cities and see them very rarely.T hey are fairy nice but if you annoy them , i would start running.

Generally kangaroos live in the bush or on the outskirts of cities.  Quite often they're seen on golf courses that skirt bushland.  I live in Canberra, about 2kms from bushland, and in the last 10 years I've seen three kangaroos in my street.  Unfortunately, because they wander into the streets by mistake, they panic and the RSPCA has a hard time catching them.

Kangaroos are shy creatures. They might stand and stare at anyone passing by on a track, but will not approach.  Large male kangaroos can sometimes be dangerous if you encroach too far into their territory.  A Canberra tourist website says "Kangaroos also stray into the city's parks, especially in dry times, and there have been incidences where people walking their dogs had their pet killed by kangaroos. Dogs may think it is fun to chase wildlife but a large kangaroo can stand its ground very well."

It depends where you live.... I live in the outer suburbs of Melbourne and to be honest with you I don't see kangaroos THAT much.. infact I see more Wallabies than roos...

However .. where I grew up .. in a rural area of southern New South Wales... you can see roos on a daily basis. When I was little it was nothing to go over to a neighbour's home where they had a farm and find that they would have a couple of little joeys in hessian bag *pouches* that had been orphaned... the little joeys would jump out of their *pouches* and jump around the kitchen ... ( THIS IS TRUE NOT B/S)... they were too little to be left alone and the hessian bag pouches where hung near the wood stoves for warnth

As for their nature .. LOL they are fine if you leave them be .. but annoy them and they could injure you very badly ...

well they don't run (or hop) thru our main streets.  They are in the "outback" but you don't have to go that "out back" to see them.  I live in Sydney and NEVER see Kangaroos coz I'm in the city.

They are nice to look at, and in the zoos they are usually nice.

They are actually quite dangerous.  They can rear up on their back legs/tail and they have sort of hook like thigs they can hack predators with.  My nan told me a story once that the kangaroos, when getting chased by dingoes (a wild dog is the best explination of a Dingo, I guess), they kangaroo jumps in a shallow river, gets up on it's tail and hacks the dingo to kill it.

Kangaroos taste really, really, really good.  It's my fave kind of meat. High protein, low fat...very tender....better than lamb!  I also heard that Australia is the only country where it is legal to eat the national animal.

The Emu (flightless bird) and Kangaroo appear on our Coat of Arms because they cannot walk backwards - they are used as a symbol of a "nation moving forward".

i live near Brisbane QLD & i see some near everyday on the way to work & back there is a fair size mob that live not far from me often see them on the side of the road after they have been hit by traffic regulars on that road know to look out for them

I live in an outer suburb of a capital city and we see kangaroos everyday. They roam all over the local golf course too. They are such a common occurrence that we take no notice of them !!

Outside of highly Urbanised areas roos are quite common.  Very often a hazard for motorists driving between towns.

Here in Aus we all have a Kanga- we don't need cars, we just ride our roos to where ever we are going- it cuts down on the green house effect- some Kanga's can be a pain in the ****, occasionally, when they get tired of us jumping all over them (oh yeah; we use them as a substitute of the opposite gender) but generally, they are in a good enough mood.

Jezz- I thought most Aussies would be able to have a good laugh about it instead of giving me thumbs down--obviously not- I suppose the fact that Aussies are meant to have a 'great sense of humour' is changing.

Generally they live outside of the highly urbanised areas.

That's not to say you have to go as far as the "Outback".  Just areas with some space..
