Do people in France switch to English, when you try to speak French?

I'm going to France for the first time in the summer(paris to be exact). I'd like to know if, when you try to speak to the locals in French, if they'll just switch to English. A lot of my friends told me that when they tried to speak to people in French, the locals would just respond in English. However, I'm wondering if this may have been due to their low French level. (I'm only in high school, so they would have been speaking with very low level high school french!) So, in France do the locals switch to English, even if you're pretty good at French?

here is the question in French: (I am hoping a France person could answer!)

Je vais voyager au France pour le premier fois cette ete, et je voudrais savior si quand on essaye parler avec un natif, on va te parler en francais, ou en anglais. Mes amis me dire que on va parler en anglais, pas francais. Est-ce vrai?

Nous tenons beaucoup sur la forme de la question, celui qui nous posera une question sans une forme de politesse (excusez moi, s´il vous plait ..... et meme en anglais)sera regulierement ignoree ou meme rabrouée.

You go girl. I first went to Paris at 15 with school, then sent myself there at 18 and 19 with my friend. I took french in high school and I did my best. i wanted to keep speaking french so I got annoyed they wouldn't let me. i guess if they feel at your accent ( even if your french is pretty good, you cannot hide your accent) that you are british or american, if they speak a little bit of english they will try to talk to you in english, because as a guest it's a basic rule of politeness to try to make you comfortable.... This being said most of  french people are not very good in english and if you show a good french speaking they will quickly switch to french. You should not worry about that.

Quand tu leur parles en Français, les gens apprécient et ils te répondent parfois en Anglais pour t'aider car il peuvent penser que tu ne parles pas bien le Français. Mais si ils voient que tu te débrouille bien en Français, ils vont te parler en Français.

Par contre, n'aborde jamais personne en Anglais, commence toujours en Français. Les gens parleront ensuite en Anglais ou en Français, cela dépend de tes difficultés.

bein ça dépend pourquoi on me parle; si c'est pour un renseignement et que je pense que la personne ne maîtrise pas assez le français pour qu'elle me comprenne, je vais lui répondre en anglais. Si tu veux qu'on te parle en français il faut le dire à ton interlocuteur, tu lui dis par exemple: "j'aimerais bien qu'on parle en français parce que je voudrais m'entraîner" (on peut pas savoir si les gens nous parlent en français juste pour être poli ou pour pratiquer leur français).

That's my experience.

When I'm talking to people about involved or complex subjects, its probably a good idea since my vocabulary just isn't that good.

On the other hand its sometimes a bit annoying when the subject matter is such that my language skills are fully adequate to the task.

It depends on the skill level of the person you happen to talking with.  

If the person is very good at English, they will most likely respond back to you in English.  It may be that they want to practice or maybe that they can see that it takes you a long time to come up with the necessary French to carry a converstation.  

If the person has a poor command of the English language, then they will be relieved that you spoke in French and continue the conversation in French.  

Learning a language takes time.  Through practice you will come to the point where you just automaticly fire back the correct french responses and not just spend  time translating from english to french in your head.  Keep seeking out French people until you find some that don't speak english.  Then practice with them.  Many French can't speak English so as long as you don't get discouraged, you'll find them.

Si tu parles bien français, ou si tu veux qu'on te réponde en français,  on te répondra en français, pas de soucis. En tout cas personne ne t'abordera en te parlant anglais...Mais tu trouveras toujours quelqu'un parlant anglais si tu as des difficultés en français.

La plupart des Français parlent un peu l'anglais, surtout à Paris, dans les endroits touristiques. Donc on traduira pour toi si on pense que tu ne comprends pas en français, en particulier les serveurs dans les restaurants qui n'ont pas le temps d'expliquer la même chose plusieurs fois en français.

Mais on appréciera beaucoup que tu essaies de parler français. Commence toujours une conversation en français. Et si tu ne sais pas dire quelque chose en français, excuse-toi toujours de devoir parler anglais et d'obliger ton interlocuteur à faire un effort.

As a general rule, Parisians will usually only switch to English if you have very poor French.  You should always approach someone there in French, and they will decide to respond in either English or French.  If you and your friends are in high school, however, it would be more than likely that you will be replied to in English.

A vrai dire, il vaudrait mieux d'etudier un petit peu avant que tu partes.  Personne en France n'aura envie de t'aider si tu parles francais comme une vache espagnole !!

contrairement aux idées reçues, les français aiment les touristes étrangers, si un americain  ou un anglais leur parle anglais, les français feront l'effort de parler aussi anglais.

Par contre, les premiers mots doivent etre échangés en français, si tu t'adresses  ÃƒÂƒÃ‚  un français directement en anglais, tu risque de te faire mépriser, au meme tire qu'un français en vacances  ÃƒÂƒÃ‚  l'etranger, fera toujours l'effort de parler au moins quelques mots dans la langue du pays visité.

En France, nous detestons les americains (souvent eux) qui nous parle en anglais comme si c'etait normal et que tout le monde devait les comprendre, il n'y a rien de plus enervant, et en général, les français arretent la conversation de suite.

Mais si la personne fait un effort, meme tres petit, pour glisser quelques mots en français, elle sera tres  tres bien reçue et appreciée.

Nous aimons beaucoup les voyageurs, et tu sera tres bien reçu si tu fais juste le premier pas.

Hi there... I have been to Paris 4 times (my uncle lives there).  My experience has been that sometimes the French do respond to you in English even if you try to speak French to them.  In Paris, everyone knows English, so even if you are trying to be polite by attempting to speak their language, they might try to help you out by speaking English back to you.  This happened to me in a French restaurant when I made the mistake of saying "Bonjour" in the evening when I should have said "Bonsoir".  Plus I'm sure my American accent tipped them off (yes we do have accents even though we don't think we do).  So they immediately started speaking English to me (even though I still attempted to speak some French, albeit probably poorly)

I also think that they respect us more if we attempt their language first.  However you won't get every Parisian to speak to you in English.  I'm sure some French people believe that since you are in their country that you should speak their language.  Goodness knows Americans believe that if you are in America that you should speak English!
