Do people in Mexico differentiate between Canadians and people from the United States?

Or are we all gringos?

If a Mexican were introducing a Canadian and someone from the USA to other Mexicans, what would he say?

Soy Mexicano, Thomas es un canadiense, and Harry es un (hombre de EEUU?). What would be the common thing to say there?

I've been down there a few times, and have not really noticed if locals differentiate between Canadians and americans...

A lot of them ask where I'm from, but as I have only travelled with fellow Canadians, I have not noticed if we are treated differently or anything like that...

But I think both Canucks and americans are gringos....

im mexican and i always say he is from the united states or he is from canda or he is from germany, things like that

Thomas es un Canadiense(canada)

Harry es Americano(American)

They know they are different countries, in fact they probably know more international geography than most Gringos.  I guess you would say: Yo soy de Mexico, Thomas es Canadiense y Harry es Americano.

The term Americano is widely used for citizens of the USA.  Gringo while originally reserved for people of the USA is now used often to refer to any kind of foreigner.  According to the Urban Legend the term Gringo comes from: "Green Go Home" a chant the people in Mexico used to yell to the invading American Troops in Mexico after one of the several wars fought between Mexico and the USA.  The USA soldiers used to wear a green uniform and thus the chant.

Well i can tell when someone's not from Mexico but i don't "tag" them as anything until i get to know them i live in Guanajuato and here you can find lots of people from other countries and even though you can see lots of blonde blue eyed girls you can't tell where are they from many people from Norway or France for instance it's wondering touristing in the streets and sometimes people say hes/shes gringo/a, but later you find out they were wrong  gringo just apply for americans,gabacho it's another word for americans, and i want to say that it is not per se an insult for americans (neither gringo or gabacho) it's just a way to call them nothing racial etc, if you want to say he's american properly you would have to say es estadounidense.

They don't have to.  The way Canadians and Americans act in Mexico are apples and oranges.  They can spot an American a mile away...because they are often rude, obnoxious and act like Mexico is just an extension of their own country.  Canadians are way more laid back and friendly but they also are extremely cheap and willing to barter to the very end.

In first, either canadians or americans are called "gringos", after we (mexicans) know somebody is from Canada, he is no longer "gringo". There is even more. Depending in where you are and the knowledge of your mexican friends, but often it is not the same to be "anglo" canadian or "french" canadian (franco-canadiense or quebequense). Quebecois people usually are more similar to us, we have some common feelings, only that quebecois are more "nationalistics" than mexicans. It is probably because they are "latins" too, but surrounded by an anglo sea.

my experience is that you are going to be called a gringo, people will assume you are from the US.  but when you say you're canadian, you are instantly off the hook, and no one calls you gringo anymore.  they call you canadian.  meaning...yes they distinguish, and it's better to be canadian.

(basically stemming from the fact that it's much easier for a mexican to visit canada, so it appears as though canada is more accepting, therefore they like canadians more....and maybe canadians are nicer:)
