Do people in japan read downwards

basicly i was wondering do they read & write left to right or up to down?

yes. traditonaly its up and down. But then they have westernized some things. So some will be read from left to right.

but recently people read it left to right and sometimes (well mostly books + textbooks) people read it up to down
