Question:

Do people in the UK have computers?

I'm from Miami, traveling to England in a week. I don't really want to visit England because I've heard it's old, small, and backward, but I have to as part of a family trip. How will I pass my time in the UK? I'm big into computer games. Do they have computers there or should I bring my own laptop? Ugh...

  1. Of course we have computers, otherwise how would I be writing this?

We may be small (compared to America) and the country may be older with a rich heritage, but we are most certainly not backwards. We have all the same technology as America has, and you will find free WiFi in many cafes and town centres. However, don't plug your computer into the mains without an adaptor - our voltage is 230V whereas yours is a lot lower (130V from memory) - our electricity will fry your computer.

  2. almost everyone has a computer in this country, we are very very upto date with technology, your question makes it sound like we're a 3rd world country! we have telephone boxes that have broadband on in the streets

  3. it's quite funny that, what your using to ask this question, the World Wide Web was invented by a man from England called Tim Berners Lee

so yes i think we may just have the capability to have computers in this country

and since a recent Japanese study showed that over 40% of modern day inventions used on a regular basis were created by the British, i throw out a guess that we are one of the most technologically advanced nations.

  4. wow i am so jealous of you i want to go to england so baddddddd. can your parents take me instead? you can stay in seattly where there is heaps to do, next to alki beach???

  5. I think you will be WAY too busy to need a lap top...  and they have internet cafes to check your e mail...

There is so much to see and do there, I'm glad your family is letting you see a wonderful country, you are truely lucky.  It is cool!

Don't bring the laptop. it is going to be a pain in the *** to keep up with, and it would be a tradgedy if you dropped it or lost it right?   leave it at home.  you won't need it.

  6. Consider England as pretty much what the States was like 20 years ago but with modern technology. If you don't want to go out and look at old stuff, you can always sit in and watch TV, we've pretty much got all of your shows, but really, since you're coming here, why don't you make the effort to go and see at least a bit of England? This is where a lot of your forefathers came from, other people will be really jealous that you got to come here, you might as well try to make the most of it.

  7. we have a few internet cafes n that but ur best bringin ur own laptop.. and england aint backwards thanks!

  8. Whoever told you the UK is backward probably went to the UK's version of redneck alley.  Perhaps it was one of Jerry Springer's trailer trash "guests" that told you we were backwards! Small the mainland may be ( only 874 miles from top to bottom) but within there is plenty to see and do.

Our power supply is 220 - 240 volts alternating current so would require the right transformer for your Laptop's use. Try bringing your Nintendo DS or PSP instead. The UK has a higher percentage of computers per home than the US of A.

lots and lots of Wi-Fi hot spots. How you pass your time is your own business, there is plenty of choice. TV is no longer limited to a few stations. On "satellite" there are over 600 channels. Including lots of American News, Film and TV programmes. We even have HD!

Better still - lighten up a bit. There is plenty to see here. It is after all "the old country". There is bound to be a little more history here as (lets face it) America was stocked from European migrants. Egypt has the pyramids and the Sphinx. They are about the same age as Stonehenge.

    And theres more.......................................

  9. All these English people on Yahoo Answers,

..No ,we couldn't possibly have computers and internet.

  10. England is not backwards it is the same as the USA. Its all stereotypes and none of it is true. You will definately find a lot of things to pass your time, and yes i have a computer like about 99 percent of the population does.

  11. wow, they should leave you home then. it's too bad you aren't interested because UK is way cool.

i save all my pennies to go every year.

leave your computer at home, the electricity is not the same.

how shall you pass the time--  well it ain't like you'll be sitting in the motel 6, hun.   you will be immersed in history, shops, cafes, sit and watch the world go by. tour historic buidlings and homes, castles,  villages, museums, theater, palaces. go to a pub, have lunch, hang out.  meet people.

  12. Ovcourse the UK has computors

Its far more technologialy advanced than the United States

Everyone thinks the Uk is smalled old fashioned and backwards but its not so

There are areas styled like this because thats what most tourists want - but most areas are completly different

    There are internet cafes everywhere

but if you bring your laptop the UK has free Wi-Fi internet conections in most of its towns and citys

There are plently of game shops - Game, HMV, Virgin, etc

most of which you can attualy play the games in the shop

I wouldnt recomend buying them from the UK though because the US currency isnt worth wiping your **** with at the moment in exchange rate terms so you wont find any bargins on games that have just come out

But HMV does have fantastic offers as low as £2-£5 ($4-$10)

Bringing your laptop  remember that the UK has very stringent Airline rules and you wont be allowed to carry it onto the plane - so just remember to wrap it well as it will have to go in the baggage hold.

  13. Most of the population has computers and access to the internet. There are plenty of internet cafés, but don't expect them to do much more than surf the net - and our internet is an average of 8mbps in most places.

  14. yes we're old, sitting here surrounded by ancient ruins that we worship, we're backward and inbred, and very very small and crowded ... I wouldn't bother coming ... our computers are thin on the ground and steam-driven ... if you bring your own laptop you won't find anything to plug it into because our electricity is different from yours and will blow it up

  15. Get a good education first mate. You sure you know WHERE the United Kingdom is on the World map?

  16. the UK is the same herritage as THE US with have major cities with tall buildings, a very strong economy, people own every electrical gadget on the market, nearly every body in the country has computers. Mean come on we are the 4th most advanced and developed country in the world! Our GDP per a person(how rich we are per person) is exactly the same as the USA. The UK isent old and backward one slightest bit. What the h**l do they teach u in the states its like your all thick.
