High-fructose corn syrup extends the shelf life of foods and is sweeter and cheaper than sugar. For these reasons, it has become a popular ingredient in many sodas, fruit-flavored drinks and other processed foods. Check your food labels. You may be surprised by how many foods contain high-fructose corn syrup.

Some nutrition experts blame increased consumption of high-fructose corn syrup for the growing obesity problem. One theory is that fructose is more readily converted to fat by your liver than is sucrose, increasing the levels of fat in your bloodstream. But this hasn't been proved.

In addition, animal studies have shown a link between increased consumption of high-fructose corn syrup and adverse health effects, such as diabetes and high cholesterol. However, the evidence is not as clear in human studies.

  1. I look for drinks sweetened with glucose, fructose, sugar, or cane sugar.

They actually TASTE way better, much more refreshing.

  2. I just saw a commercial last night regarding that...but they were trying to rebuff that argument. I think all convenience foods, which are a staple in households where most people work, we are all going for the fastest, easiest way. My guess is if produce wasn't so expensive, most of us would eat it in volumes. I try to, but it isn't always possible. Thanks for the info and links.

  3. No - people don't realise.  I just can't believe people would eat this crud.  And they don't want to know.  Aspartame makes me even madder!!  I wish people would just stop buying c**p.

Sugar has been unneccesarily demonised for no other reason than chemical companies have made sweeter substitutes, that are all much, much, much worse for you than sugar.  But the big companies obviously have more political and advertising power than a sugar farmer.  And they've managed to make half the world believe they're better off for it.

Choose natural people - there IS no substitute!!!

  4. yes they do but it tastes good and is addictive like cigarettes, it also gives you a cold and refreshing burn in your throat when your hung over after a long night of binge drinking and tastes great with pizza!

  5. Yes but don't worry to much, nearly every single foodstuff in existance has positive and negatives to them regarding your health. It's best to eat a balanced diet on whole.
