Do people really find islam as that much of a threat to western society?

here's somethin i read here on yahoo answers a few minutes ago in response to a question "will the world REALLY be mixed in the future?"

"No, the world won't be mixed. Only its western part will be mixed. It's a tax for our wealth and quality of living. Like each coin has two sides, the negative side of living in a wealthy and developed country is that there's a lot of folks out there who want to live in the same country you live.

But according to me, the ethnic origin is not the primary problem. The primary problem is the mentality of immigrants, their culture, different form our own, their religion and their way of life.

Our "civil rights" and "freedoms" and especially the "freedom of mind" have one serious problem. They're not designed for a case if somebody freely chooses not to live freely. And that's the case of Islam in the western society. Islamic men and women can live freely after they immigrate to Europe and America, they can abandon the bonds of their religion but they do not. They freely choose not to live freely. Because Muslims don't live freely. Take a look at the Saudi Arabia and other countries in the Middle East. In Saudi Arabia, women can't drive a car, they can't do much without their husband. If a woman was denied the right to drive a car just because she's a woman, it would be a violation of human rights, it would be a discrimination here! But there, it's not. It's normal. Islamic women don't live freely.

But from the moment they're here, they CAN live freely, but they choose not to. And that's a threat for our society because if in large numbers, they can negatively influence the rest of the society which still thinks more-or-less freely. So that's what we have to focus on, we can't allow to happen that a major part of the society deliberately choose not to think freely.

I am not afraid of other races. They're not worse than we are. But I dare say that their culture, especially if it's Islam or some other dogmatic religion, can be a threat to our own liberties and way of life. To achieve these liberties, people fought the dogmas of the catholic church for centuries. Many of them were slaughtered for their free thinking after they were declared heretics and various Satan worshipers. So we can't allow that to happen. We have to fight this battle to defend our way of life and we have to start fighting until it's too late"

and what's interesting is that no one is forcing people to convert to islam...

i don't see why all the religions can't co-exist

I kind of agree with Ziggy.People should not see Islam as a threat, but only the people who use Islam as an excuse to kill other people. Those terrorists are not true Muslims at all. If people followed Islam correctly, the Middle East and other Muslim countries would be some of the most peaceful in the world. Islam teaches Muslims that they should respect other religions and coexist with them.

The terrorists out there unfortunately don't listen to this part of Islam, they only use Islam as an excuse to harm others

Also, the part about how Islam forbids Saudi women to do anything on their own, such as drive a car, IS COMPLETELY UNTRUE!!!!!! This is a law enforced by the Saudi government, not Islamic law. Islam gives women the right to vote, hold positions and run for government, work in jobs, own businesses, invest or spend their money in any way they wish, etc.

Here again, Saudi uses Islam as an excuse to discriminate against others, even though women ARE given the same rights as men.

IT IS NOT THE RELIGION THAT IS THE PROBLEM.

IT'S THE PEOPLE WHO ALTER THE RELIGION.

In response to your headline question (details tooooo wordy), I don't think people see Islam as the threat, as much as those who use Islam as a crutch for violence and terrorism.

You put forth a good case scenario and its something I've been thinking about. I would hope that the liberties of the majority would trickle down to immigrants once they learn our way of life. As long as we don't coddle to their cultural ways. They came here to join us. In doing so their responsibility is to learn English (our language) and assimilate into the mix. Its a choice they must make in making their journey. Give up the old ways. I am not liberal enough to accept towers of Islam blaring prayers or disruption of business and school for the sake of religious prayers. They can stay away.and reap the benefits of their overlord kings.
