I'd like to try swimming for keeping fit, but haven't swum since school (15 years ago). I've got highlights in my hair and don't want them to fade or go green,

  1. I am not super into swimming or anything, but I do know a thing or two as I used to date a swimmer... there are a couple reasons for the hats: 1.) chlorine can damage your hair and even cause it to turn this yellow-ish green color if you are over exposed to it on a daily basis- nasty! 2.) It helps swimmers move faster in the water by reducing the amount of "drag" (in other words, hair slows you down when you're swimming- this is also why male swimmers shave thier bodies right before swim meets.)

  2. not for fun.

  3. First of all it is called a cap. heres my advise, before you go into a pool, take a shower or rinse your hair with water. Your hair absorbs water so it is better to have it be absorbed with non-chlorinated water. Dont wear a cap, you will look out of place, and afterwards just take another shower and you should be fine. Im a swimmer and my hair dresser gave me these tips.

  4. Personally I don't think this is a big problem. Swimming caps are intended to be used in a pool so who is going to be able to comment on you wearing a swim cap in a pool. As long as you feel comfortable youll be fine.

Your question is also slightly misleading because swimming for fun for some people means messing about in the pool with floats etc.

You have said that you would like to swim to keep fit, if this is by doing lengths you will find that a great number of other swimmers use caps as well, it may look odd but it is more convenient and all the swimmers are in the same boat anyway!

Be confident and wear one if you feel that your hair colour might change!

  5. Hi,

If you are concerned about the chlorine damaging your hair (a very reasonable concern), you should use a shampoo and/or conditioner designed to protect and clean your hair from swimming pool chemicals.

There are a number of shampoos and conditioners designed specifically for swimmers:

Happy swimming and best of luck keeping your hair clean!

  6. Some do but not usually. Hats are more for increasing speed

  7. If your hair is blonde (which it is on your avatar),

it might get a greenish tinge if exposed to too much chlorine.

If you want to swim to keep fit, yes, wear a cap

    My tips-

before putting on your cap, soak your hair with water (not pool water clean water), and that way it will absorb less chlorine

Wash your hair with swimmer's shampoo straight after getting out of the pool to get the chlorine out

  8. im on the swim team and im not sure what a swimming hat is. like a cap??? they dont protect highlights, your hair still gets wet.

  9. Swim hats? Haha; swim caps*

They honestly don't help your hair that much, your hair is still soaking wet when you take it off; I wear one for competitive swimming. But if you're not swimming everyday for 2 hrs or more then it would be alright for your hair, just make sure to treat it with good, voluminous shampoo, not the cheap stuff.
