Question:

Do people think they're "cool" to curse in a restaurant?

I work as a waitress, and am finding it very common to hear customers curse in restaurants. It's not just young people, it's 30-40 year olds too. Its the big F word too, not just other words. Do I have a right to say something to these people? It is usually when they are talking to each other at a table. But they are loud enough that other tables can hear it. My boss said that we are allowed to say something, but where does one draw the line? When other customers complain? Thanks for any help!

  1. Yes you have a right to say something to these people.  It's just flat out disrespectful to the people around them (who you have to remember are your patrons).  The more that a facility tolerates cursing, the fewer customers they'll draw in the long run.  As for me, if I'm in a restaurant where there are customers who curse frequently, I'm taking my business elsewhere.  Especially if I have young children in my party.

It's kinda sad that things are coming to this and people are becoming so increasingly disrespectful.  But your stand is on the fact that there are other customers, and if they can't control their language then you're going to have to ask them to leave.

  2. Yes, sadly, but yes.  I have a feeling they're trying to just be showy and get attention, not to mention being rude and impolite.  If other customers start complaining, I would mention it to the boss again, and tell he/she that they have been disrupting other customers, so maybe if the boss takes an interest they may say something.  If they do it multiple time, and loudly, I would say something like, please watch your language.  If they still do it, i would go to the boss.  Even if the ones cursing are rude to you, just know its not your problem, and that you are just trying to be considerate to others.  Good luck.

  3. People are always concerned about curse words.   d**n...  wtf is the problem with people expressing themselves?  Does saying "the F-word" make it better than say ****?  No, because you know that both mean the same thing.

Unless they are directing the curses at you, kept your mouth shut and get me another beer, sweetie.

  4. No

  5. Just tell them that you have had some complaints and would like them to hold their voices down if they have to cuss. You boss needs to be willing to back you up on this and to kick them out if they don't stop.  I have found that people in general think it is cool to cuss.  To me it just makes them look like idiots.

  6. people who curse in a resturant are just being rude they just want to spoil others nights because theres has been ruined

  7. .

  8. Sadly, I think it is the way our society has devolved in general.  I hear people cursing just about everywhere in public these days.  I think some people think it is cool, but some people do it because they have no respect of others around them>>>>>>>>>it is horrible.

  9. If they are LOUD and disruptive, tell the hostess or the manager to say something to them. Even if you fib and say some of the other customers were complaining, at least you did something for the others that may not feel secure enough to complain on their own

  10. YAH!! my boyfriend does it like all the time and everyone stares

  11. It's just plain out rude and trashy!  Who speaks that way in public to let others hear?

I probably wouldn't say anything if they were quite, but shouting or purposely talking for others to hear then yes, I would ask my manager to say something

  12. I would wait until other customers complained. If you don't have a real reason to confront them about it then you are going to start a huge fight right there in front of everyone.

  13. I would ask these people not to use that kind of language!

  14. people are just rude and have no up bringing

  15. well, yes, you can say something.  in texas, if you are offended by this foul mouth person, you can, if you feel it necessary, call the police.  it is a class "C" misdemeanor.  DOC (disorderly conduct) Lang.  it is just a ticket, but, they might be more careful the next time they decide to run the filthy pie hole under their nose.

  16. I think you sould say something.

  17. Next time that happens tell the customer:

    Please control your language.

If they continue remind them that this is a public area and people are out to have a good time. or

ask the manager to come and talk to the table. it is their job to say things to the customer when others complain.
