Question:

Do people view millitary men as more intelligent or less intelligent than civillians.?

I'm joining the army reserves. I've had a good job, but I want something more. I"ve heard feedback from people that the millitary doesn't attract smart people anymore, but I'm college educated. Additionally, I think it will supplement my resume.

  1. Hmm. Depends really, In some cases i think the army does attract people with lesser educations than other people. However this depends on the type of rank you go to.

I mean an educated person would thrive in the army and be well respected and probably suceed more quickly than a non educated person. However you should ask at your local army branch.

  2. Why do you care what people think?  A responsible job in the military is as good as a responsible job in private industry.

If you would enjoy serving in the reserves, that is more important than if it connects to your civilian career.  People respect a person who knows what he wants and does it.

  3. Well, you seem to be quite intelligent already.

And, I would give credit to anyone [whether a

civie or not]  who wanted to increase

    their knowledge.

Maybe it's not that it doesn't attract

"smart" people, but maybe it attracts "intelligent"

people who want to increase their intelligence.

I would think that a person who would say

something like that would be someone who

    is ignorant [not having knowledge].

I would think any job that would give you

    additional knowledge, could only make

you more intelligent.  It doesn't make a dif

whether a civie or enlisted.  It's all your

choice if you choose to increase your

knowledge, that can only be a good thing!!

Good Luck and I, and America, thank you!!

  4. If you get in as an officer, it can't hurt. And I believe that chicks still dig a guy in uniform, but I'm not sure if anyone still uses the word "dig" in that sense.

  5. I've had employment and education in "the civilian world" and I still choose to serve.  My reasons are my own.  I know teachers, lawyers, doctors who serve, right along with carpenters, plumbers, and welders.

No one who looks down on you for being a soldier is worth your concern in their opinion.  Anyone who claims that you are of lesser intelligence is putting their foot in their mouth.

  6. Sure.

    They were intelligent.

    To face the real world.

Look who's living in Fantasy Toyland with all the match-box toy cars  and living dolls around them?

Don't forget to put flowers on their hair.

    What do you think?

  7. I don't think it has any influence as far how intelligent I think somebody is. I think of military people as a bit more regimented and disciplined. A military person is less likely to have lateness problems, for instance.

  8. I just finished serving 6yrs in the Air Force. The military teaches how to learn, be assertive, and strive to reach any goals you would have, be it personal or military.

  9. There has been mention of soldiers which receive training in many languages and a reputation for intelligence. The soldiers of this type though have been Special Operations and not Reservists. There has also been soldiers which have been taught to speak the languages of the people where they might go on station or to war with. In WW2 all soldiers who did not already know German were taught to speak and read German. This being the case no one should assume that any soldier is stupid as usually the mistake lies elsewhere. The famous Kipling lines ''It's Tommy this and Tommy that'', Tommy let's take a walk '' and then it's Tommy you have been dropped''. Not sure how the last goes so put the equivalent of the sentiment  of the Kipling.

  10. People generally prefer cosy civil jobs rather than a profession in the army. Only those who did not get an employment in the civil side, end up joining the military. I have notice that the military people are honourable men, who develop a sense of value and dignity in what they do. Often, then carry a sense of injustice and hurt against the civilians for the reason that the the country have not recognised the sacrifice they make. They are gullible and innocent, by and large.

  11. You are college educated and you are wondering what other people will think of your intellectual level if you join the army reserves?

I never thought that anyone joined the reserves because they were stupid .

If you had quit high school to go into the service , people might think that of you .

I just wonder why you care what other people think .  You are a man and this is your decision to make ...

Good luck in the reserves .

  12. If your joining as ground combat forces you may only receive respect from others with military background or those fond of the military. However if you're joining as a rescue worker, squad leader, scientist, etc, I think it would be a good add on to any resume. Just don't get dishonorably discharged! =)

  13. I'm an ex serviceman (British Army), Having lived in both environments i would say there is no definitive answer. I have met some servicemen and without the uniform would have made medical history, of how a single celled creature could stand upright. On the other hand i have met some very intellectual men and women on duty.  Upon leaving the forces i ended up working along side a young man who could not read. The basic requirement to join the army is to be able to read.
