I live in Chico Ca, we have a community and a university college . I almost have a associate degree but I was recently diagnosed with bipolar, a mental illness. I end up dropping out because I get manic-depression episodes and miss class and fall behind . I am going to again this semester but my money is going to waste. So I thought I might try the online route one that is more flexible and covenant and at your own pace a try.

When you get interviewed for a position and they require a bachelors in a field that the online schooling can train you for, are they going to see those degrees as a joke, not a prestigious education or even a valid education and end up always favoring the traditional way??

Does any one know the ratio or statistics for success through that route?

Anyone out there got one and end up getting what they wanted, and if so tell me your field and did you like it? Oh by the way I was majoring in psychology but I am going to change that to being an English major or something in writing since that is what I am good at and a Passion.

  1. Yep.  Most employers will require that you have a degree, not where you got it from.  And if the online curriculum is from an accredited school, then the rest shouldn't matter.

My sister lives in Chico and she is married with children.  I have been trying to encourage her to go back and finish grad school online, since she doesn't have time to go and sit in class and online school will be more convenient.

If you have bi-polar issues, you also need to concentrate on getting your medication stabilized and going to therapy regularly, or else you won't be able to concentrate on any type of school.

  3. A degree is a degree, doesn't matter how you got it, but from where! You'll be fine.

  4. This actually depends on several factors.  First, the school.  If you choose a school that just happens to offer an on-line option, it won't be a problem (in fact you probably don't have to disclose that you did this solely on line unless asked directly).  If however, you choose a school that advertises in the penny saver, even if it is accredited, it will not only be much more expensive than a state funded school, but not as well respected by perspective employers as one from a state school.  For example, when we were going through entry level resumes in some of my old jobs, among recent college graduates, we would give extra consideration for people who went to a prestigious school or those who had a great gpa and put those people who had graduated from well known online schools at the bottom of the pile.  I actually did have a high school friend who chose the online school route and she told me that she had zero luck finding a job and eventually had to take a job that only required a high school education because she couldn't find a professional position, and she paid three times more than I did in tuition (I went to a decently ranked public university).

That being said, having a college degree from an accredited online school is better than not having a degree at all.

One more thing to consider is that going the online route is actually much harder than the traditional route because you don't have the structure of a traditional class room and this is exacerbated if you have a mental illness.

I wish you all the best in your future endeavors, good luck.

  5. Online degrees are being widely recognized by employers across the world. But what you need to make sure is that the college or university you acquire your online degree from is ACCREDITED or else your degree would be nothing but a piece of  paper on which you spent time money and energy. hope it helps :)
