Question:

Do people who were in the Army Reserve qualify for Veterans Benefits?

I joined in the mid-80's as a PFC (had some college). I had to wait to go to basic training because of the training I chose, but I did go to a few monthly meetings. When it was time to go to basic training, they wouldn't let me go because I had some medication I hadn't finished taking. I was later put in the inactive reserve, and received an honorable discharge after my time was up. Now my friend says I may be eligible for medical benefits. Could he be correct?

  1. yes

  2. I doubt it.  How much Active Duty did you have, and was the medical condition connected to the military?  From what I read I do not see any connection, however I would suggest you visit the VA and ask them the question just to be sure.

  3. No he is not correct. You must have served at least 6 months on active duty to be elgible!

  4. No, you didn't graduate from basic and therefore never had any active duty time. You need 180 days active duty time to qualify for any VA benefits.

  5. Contact the DAV and ask to speak to a Service Officer. They deal with this type of stuff all day long. They will ask for your VA file number or your SS#. If your aren't a member (which I'm assuming you aren't) they'll ask a few questions. Just tell they what you know and be as precise as you can.
