People from the U.N. qualify for additional funds based on the living costs of a particular country, and also may qualify for tuition assistance for their children. When stationed in the third world on a salary of 100,000 euro they live like kings if in the back country. We are talking about areas where people don't make 1000 euro a year. New York, Zurich,  Brusslels, Hong Kong, and other high expense areas can be a shock.

Yes, people work for the UN, whether the Secretariat or one of the many UN agencies make a competitive salary and become part of a very good pension program. However, they do NOT all get to travel around the world for free, as one poster said -- not all staff get to travel (it depends on the kind of job you have), and the UN *does* have to pay for its travel expenses (there are no travel freebies).
