  1. NO job has a "set insurance" based on the name of the job.  It's ALWAYS about the employer.

For PT's, many are independent contractors - which means they don't get any benefits.   Employers are NOT required by law to provide health insurance, either.

So it's on a case by case basis, with each employer.

  2. Well, I think the statement that most PTs are independent contractors without benefits it a little uninformed because most PTs are working in hosptial based clinics or outpatient private clinics.  Most likely, if working for a large institution or health care system, the employer provides professional liability.  Yet, it's a good idea to know what the policy actually covers, where is coverage you and to what extent (for instance, a friend of mine does some pro bono work with the high school, so she purchased her own policy).

Liability/malpractice insurance for PTs is usually pretty low because we are a low risk group.  People rarely try to sue PTs.

Although I am insured by my employers, I chose to also have my own policy (in case I see someone pro bono on my own time or volunteer my services somewhere).  I believe my policy is $127 for a million dollar policy/3 million aggregate.

...small price to pay for piece of mind
