Question:

Do pilots live a hectic life?

I've heard that the life of a pilot isn't a very easy one. Away from home and their families alot. Horrible hours. But what bugs me i suppose is the fact that if this is true, why do people keep becoming one? So if anyone has any info on whether or not this is true, I would appreciate it very much so. Thank you

  1. Kat is correct....I fly some odd days and weird hours...all part 91...but it does get hectic....but...like this week...i have worked 6 days straight..and after thursday i get 6 days off...doesnt always work out like that...but most of the time it does....it all depends on what type of flying you are doing...

  2. I'll say! They're ALWAYS flying off to SOMEWHERE!  :)

  3. it depends on the company you work for .i have worked with pilots that would be gone from there family weeks at a time and they have left that as its just not possible to have a family life .but my husband is home every single night unless the plane goes tech which has not happened in 5 years .That he has not been home at night .If you do want to be a pilot do your homework and find out what companys are home at night and there days off etc like working five days get four off

  4. Yes

  5. Pilots LOVE to fly.  They sacrifice a lot to become pilot and stay pilots.

But their lives are not so HECTIC.  It is very well scheduled as their air flights are always scheduled.  The only thing is that the schedule makes them fly at crazy hours and be away for days at a time (and do that for years).

Basically it is NOT a 9 to 5 job - but it is NOT hectic.  Hectic imply very unscheduled life style.

    good Luck...

  6. yes it is quite hectic, we fly off for days at a time, leaving at odd hours and then come back tired. and then got to catch a flight to be back with the wife/gf for afew days and then come back to work again.

  7. I go to work for 17 days straight and fly whenever my company needs me to go.  I don't know in advance where I am going to go, when, and what I will be carrying.  The only thing I do know that when my 17 days are done I will go home and won't have to think about work until next month - I will have 13-14 days to spend home with my family - 24 hrs a day - not a brief 'hello' in the morning before rushing to the office, and few hours in the evening when everyone is tired and cranky after a long day at work and school.  Some people would find it unbelievably hectic and generally unlivable,  I happen to love it.

With some past airline jobs I was based out of the city I lived in, 12-14 days a month I would wake up at 6am, drive 10 min to the airport, fly two 2-3 hr legs, and be home at 3-4 pm.

There is a huge variety of pilot jobs out there, with varying schedules, locations, and lifestyles.   Some people love them, others hate them.  Everyone needs to find something to do that works the best for him/her.

  8. yes it is true but some people dont mind that kind of life, being away from your family for days at a time means you also go days at a time without working where you can spend time with your family, you also get to travel to a lot of great places and if flying is your passion then it doesnt matter about the bad hours because you are doing what you love.
