  1. they arent really down to earth people, they tend to have their heads in the clouds

  2. Don't assume all pilots fly airlines.  Say you fly choppers for the police, do your shift and you go home every night.

  3. Some airlines have their pilots come home every night, so it depends on who you work for.  Some are gone a lot, but then have multiple days off.  It also depends on whether you wish to live in your base, or commute.  Cargo pilots often get a lot of time off, again depending on who they work for.  Of course, there is always AIDS, Aviation Induced Divorce Syndrome.  Good luck.

  4. I work for largest airline in US and schedule pilots.  High divorce rate, lousy personal life. Pick either job or family, not both.

  5. Marry an intelligent and independent lady.

She should be able to understand what your job is about and the fact that you have to spend days away. If she's smart, she will be able to manage a household/kids on her own when Dad is working.

  6. Don't listen to some of these answers..There are many different routes you can take when it comes to flying for a living...

The most common..Airlines...start you off with substandard pay and you will spend alot of time sitting on reserve in places like newark and la garbage...Not the best route to take right now....

Charter..or otherwise known as 135 is another route...depending on your company..you may have a flexible schedule...it has its ups and downs like any other carrier would...

Corporate is probably the most favorable position to be in right now in our present economic state...also..depending on your company....

I fly for a very large public traded corporation and we are not slowing down...we fly alot..and we are home alot...I spend about 8 nights a month in hotels...not bad at all...the pay is decent and perks and benefits are to die for...

I fly on average anywhere from 25 - 90 hours a month...it really depends on whether the big guys have lots of meetings or if it's quiet....

Unlike what some of the answers on here imply...I am home alot...I do fly alot....most important though...my son will grow up knowing his dad...and his mom (my wife) is very pleased with our life....

  7. my partner is a pilot and he is home every night he could work for example 5 am to 12 pm or 1 pm to 12 pm. it depends on the airline to be honest .and my partner does not do long haul but eventually i say he will have to leave nights but its all part of the work .its hard work and the people you work with are like your second family away from home.if its something you really want then go for it and most of all you enjoy your job i was cabin crew and i loved it

  8. Yes.

  9. Family life is what you make it.  I'm going 3 nights in every 7 flying for an airline.  When I'm home, though -- I'm home; trips with the family, time with the kids.

The children don't know what's "normal" and mine have always seen Dad go to the airport.  It does help I live near a large number of other airline pilots so all the families work this way.

  10. they have families at every port, so yeah.
