I am trying to find some info on the web about whether plants from the same taxonomic families share similar chemical compounds, secondary metabolites, leaf structure etc..

Can anyone confirm this and provide any further information or links to relevant web pages?

  2. Well probably not, here are two examples.

Angelica (angelica archangelica) and hemlock (conium sps.) are both members of the apiaceae family with a similar appearance but with very different nutritional properties.

The tomato (lycopersicon lycopersicum) and the deadly nightshade (atropa belladonna) both are members of the family solanaceae but I know which one I prefer in my cheese sandwiches!!

  3. yes, that's why they're in the same family...

  4. well, i think u r dealing with chemotaxonomy. then i wud say that dont mix other phenotypic characters with it. and this is nt always correct, sometime sit has been found that otherwise very unrelated plants show similar compounds and very similar plants exibit different chemicals for example lamiaceae and verbenaceae on this basis are very far away though actually they are very near. so its a case of misjudgemen due to convergent or divergennt evolution.if u hv more doubts, u cn email me
