  1. No, they have rigid cell walls to support their cell structure, and this in combination with the turgor pressure (water pressure) their cells exert on this cell wall maintains their firmness. When plants dry out they can't maintain their turgor pressure and wilt. Trees make a more permanent structure out of their cell walls (wood), which is basically a remnant of cell walls with mainly dead cells in them.

    Oh..and they don't support themselves with proteins by the way. Don't know why the other person seems to think so. The cell wall is mainly made out of lignin and cellulose, both not proteins.
