  1. Yes!  Plants use carbon dioxide (CO2) in photosynthesis to produce organic compounds such as glucose, sucrose, starch and cellulose.  From glucose, all other molecules needed for life are synthesized.

    Additionally, the roots and all cells break down sugars to release energy needed to stay alive through cellular respiration.


  2. All life on earth (that includes plants) depends on carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and hydrogen. These are the elements of organic chemistry too. Plants are the critical link in the carbon cycle for animals to get food to live.  Animals then produce carbon dioxide for the plants to grow. A wonderful balance designed into nature.

    Carbon "is present in all known lifeforms"
