Do players' post-season statistics revert to their regular season means?

Players' hitting statistics revert to their career or season means over time, mitigating the effects of hot and cold streaks. This also applies to "clutch hitting" -- given enough at bats, most players perform in the clutch just like they do at other times.

But I want to know whether the post-season works just like clutch situations. If a player gets enough post-season at bats, will his post-season statistics revert to his regular season mean?

  1. I haven't done the research, but I'd doubt it

Being good under pressure is a factor, but there are others:

    1) Fatigue - as a rule, most players' stats will decline as the season progresses, including into the postseason.  For the regular season, you get your start helping to balance out the #'s, for the postseason, you don't

    2) Weather conditions - it's colder, air's heavier, windier, etc. in October.  That'll affect different people in different ways

  2. i dont think so

  3. Let's look at one example, a well-known player who has seen ample postseason play and has a reputation for clutchness.

Granted, this is a very small sample size (one player) and, named, many fans would instantly revert to citing myth and reputation and simply ignore the what the factual data tells us.

    Player

    career regular season: .315 / .386 / .459

    career postseason: .309 / .377 / .469

Excelling in the playoffs? You make the call.
