someone told that the two irelands actually have a combined team made up of players from the republic and from norther ireland.is it true?

  6. In soccer there are two teams but in Rugby Union there is one combined Irish team consisting of players from The Republic and from Northern Ireland.  Both anthems are sung before each international.

  8. No. The Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland have separate football associations.

The rugby  team plays as a united ireland, chiefly because there is one governing body for both; there is also a single governing body for Gaelic Games in both countries. The football has one team for Northern Ireland and another for Republic of Ireland, and there are two serate governing bodies

    The Gaelic Games came about to protect an all ireland culture, so a single body made sense. Rugby at the birth o the Republic of Ireland was mostly the preserve of the professional classes. Football was considered a very english game and was played chiefly by blue collar workers and there was a strong sectarian divide already existing.

  13. In rugby union, there is only ONE team for Ireland. Amazingly, politics just about managed to stay out of the sport at International level

  14. yes the island of ireland is broken up in2 4 provinces.leinster munster ulster and connacht.players from each province represent the irish team.
