  1. The Arctic is not a biome. For the most part, it contains three biomes: perpetual snow and ice, tundra, and taiga. The Holarctic (divided into Palearctic and Nearctic) is a zoogeographic realm. Arctic, in popular parlance, is anything north of the Arctic Circle.
