  1. No, not for the larger pools. They only manage to heat the first inch or so. They do however, slow heat loss and evaporation fairly well though, especially if you live in an area that has night time air temperatures below the temperature of the pool water. If you're using a pool heater ( gas, electric or roof solar) the use of a solar blanket when you're not in the pool will dramatically reduce heat loss. There is a con to them though. They're a great spot for algae to want to grow, if given the chance so keep your chemistry balanced.

Actually, one of the best ways to reduce your heating bills costs you nothing. Instead of having your return jets pointing up, creating large ripples ( increasing the surface area of the pool and also by association, the heat loss and evaporation rate), turn your jets downward a bit, so that there is still surface action but less ripple. It works.

"Solar fish" as I've seen posted in here work to reduce pool water evaporation, not really heat loss nor do they work to actually heat the pool. They release a film of alcohol based chemical into the pool water that floats on top of the pool water, creating a barrier between water and air. The chemical evaporates off ( with heat going with it) but leaves the water itself, alone until the chemical supply from the "fish" is depleted. A gimmick really.

  2. yes and for the width of your pool you can attach you blanket to a solar reel system that way it is easier to take off if you want to get in your pool. my cousin who i work with at our familys pool store they have a solar panel system + the blanket which helps to heat it even more. we sell whats called a "solar fish" and those help to hold the heat in once it gets to around 70ish degrees but id still use the blanket with that to. hope that helps!

  3. yes. Dramatically compared to no use of a solar cover. It magnifies it so the sun is more intense and thats how it heats it.

  4. no. not really.  they heat the first few inches of water below the surface, but that's it.

the bottom of the pool stays cold.

  5. Yes, the heat very well.

And also, buy one no matter what your best answer is, because you'll probably pay much less money on heating, and heating's expensive.  My parents did it to our pool and saved a bunch of money!

  6. they do a lot compared to nothing. the problem is they are a pain because you need to put them on and take them off every time. if you don't have a heater, definitely use a solar cover.
