  1. true, you have to be enthusiastic. Your listeners will hear the happiness or down in your voice, you as a DJ can make or break the station. Ever notice how all good djd sound similar, it is the quality of believing what you do.

  2. Not always. It does make the work more enjoyable, but it's not a requirement to LIKE what you play. In fact, if  you feel you have to like the format you're playing you're less likely to hold on to a job as stations flip, and things are always changing.

  3. Depends upon the DJ, some grin and bear it as it's a paycheck but others do listen to the music and like it but usually are people who have music loves over many different genres.

Usually most are in their late 20s to late 30s (with some GASP in their 40s) and may not like the newest hip hop song, will usually love the newest by say Miley Cyrus and the other pop stars out there.

One thing I learned a long time ago about music ... If you refuse to grow and change, you will be forever stuck in the same music over and over again.

But no most DJs I know listen to what they play over the air.

  4. I can only speak for myself and my experience was some time ago. But, yes, for the most part I liked the music of the late '60s and early '70s except for the odd yuck like "Billy, Don't Be A Hero" (then I moved on to management).

I do not like what passes for pop these days. But that is to be expected as I am older now and not supposed to like it. I suspect most of the on-air folks these days like what they're doing (to include the music) or they wouldn't do it - you'd be able to tell and they wouldn't have a job anymore. Part of being a jock is to be genuinely enthusiastic about the music.
