  1. With regard to the environment, it is so big and complex that you can never say any one thing is true or false, it's all theories. However the weather has become very unstable and strange over the past few years where I live (UK). That alone, combined with all the theories discussed by scientists who have actually been studying this for years means something is seriously wrong, and although the theories we have at the moment have some holes in them, which the non-believers use to disprove theories to the general public (George Bush) any basic investigation will make you realise that yes, of course it's true.

  2. What the heck is 'official evidence'?

There are many basic scientific facts which can only be explained if the current global warming is being caused by an increased greenhouse effect due to carbon dioxide accumulating in the atmosphere from humans burning fossil fuels.

For example, the planet is warming as much or more during the night than day.  If the warming were due to the Sun, the planet should warm a lot more during the day when the Sun has influence.  Greenhouse gases trap heat all the time, so they warm the planet regardless of time of day.  Another example is that the upper atmosphere is cooling because the greenhouse gases trap the heat in the lower atmosphere.  If warming were due to the Sun, it would be warming all layers of the atmosphere.

We know it's warming, and we've measured how much:

    http://www.epa.gov/climatechange/science...

Scientists have a good idea how the Sun and the Earth's natural cycles and volcanoes and all those natural effects change the global climate, so they've gone back and checked to see if they could be responsible for the current global warming.  What they found is:

Over the past 30 years, all solar effects on the global climate have been in the direction of (slight) cooling, not warming.  This is during a very rapid period of global warming.

    http://www.pubs.royalsoc.ac.uk/media/pro...

    A recent study concluded:

“the range of  [Northern Hemisphere]-temperature reconstructions and natural forcing histories…constrain the natural contribution to 20th century warming to be <0.2°C [less than one-third of the total warming].  Anthropogenic forcing must account for the difference between a small natural temperature signal and the observed warming in the late 20th century.”

    http://www.pnas.org/cgi/content/full/104...

You can see this in the third graph here, where the dotted lines are just from natural causes, and the full lines are natural + human causes:

    http://www.pnas.org/content/vol104/issue...

If that’s not enough to convince you the Sun isn’t responsible, consider the fact that no scientific study has ever attributed more than one-third of the warming over the past 30 years to the Sun, and most attribute just 0-10% to the Sun.

    http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;...

So the Sun certainly isn't a large factor in the current warming.  They've also looked at natural cycles, and found that we should be in the middle of a cooling period right now.

"An often-cited 1980 study by Imbrie and Imbrie determined that 'Ignoring anthropogenic and other possible sources of variation acting at frequencies higher than one cycle per 19,000 years, this model predicts that the long-term cooling trend which began some 6,000 years ago will continue for the next 23,000 years.'"

    http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/ab...

So it's definitely not the Earth's natural cycles.  They looked at volcanoes, and found that

    a) volcanoes cause more global cooling than warming, because the particles they emit block sunlight

    b) humans emit over 150 times more CO2 than volcanoes annually

    http://volcano.und.edu/vwdocs/Gases/man....

So it's certainly not due to volcanoes.  Then they looked at human greenhouse gas emissions.  We know how much atmospheric CO2 concentrations have increased over the past 50 years:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Mauna...

And we know from isotope ratios that this increase is due entirely to human emissions from burning fossil fuels.  We know how much of a greenhouse effect these gases like carbon dioxide have, and the increase we've seen is enough to have caused almost all of the warming we've seen over the past 30 years (about 80-90%).  You can see a model of the various factors over the past century here:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Clima...

This is enough evidence to convince almost all climate scientists that humans are the primary cause of the current global warming.

  3. No. Its started getting colder !

  4. Yes many people do agree with it, and it does seem a reasonable theory to me.

  5. I used to think it was fake, but I am starting to develop a better safe than sorry mentality.  My true belief is that the Earth goes in natural cycles and this will eventually pass, but that doesn't mean the cycle won't negatively effect humans, or eradicate them for that matter.  I just don't want to be ignorant and I think it sucks that people who strongly support this theory have to see others putting it down like its fake and disregarding it like there is absolutely no possibility even when there is no proof against it.  Even if it is not real, it doesn't hurt to use our resources more effectively and live in a cleaner environment and try to develop alternative fuels and lower emissions.  Then again, even if it is proved, I don't believe there is anything we would be able to do to help the world, there are too many bullheaded people out there that don't want to accept reality, change their lifestyle, or be told what to do.  I am one who is gladly willing to keep current with research and do my part in helping our future even if I don't think it is real.

Morning Edition, March 19, 2008 · Some 3,000 scientific robots that are plying the ocean have sent home a puzzling message. These diving instruments suggest that the oceans have not warmed up at all over the past four or five years. That could mean global warming has taken a breather. Or it could mean scientists aren't quite understanding what their robots are telling them.

  7. I think that many people, above all politicians, manager and tycoon, don't believe global warming is real and not reversible

  8. i believe in it. there are a ton of people that blow it out of proportion, and more that don't think about it enough.

    and yes, there is evidence.

    do your research.

  9. Yes i do because its happening now and there is evidence from scientists

  10. no...the american goverment is told to disagree with global warming thoery.

  11. Well for one thing it is not global warming anymore.  It is global climate change.  This way if the global climate changes at all, the climate alarmists win.  Take a look at the scientific breakdown of all the misinformation in Gore's “documentary”.  It is not that I am not willing to hear the science and good on common sense solutions.  I believe in mans impacted on the environment.  I am worried about the destruction of natural habitats.  The pollution of water.  But I think Al Gore is jerking me and everyone around for his own ego and profit.  Do you know how much he charges to hear his speeches?  If you really thought you were saving the world by educating people, would you not talk to everyone that would listen?  Would you not answer all questions thrown at you?   Did you know GE has invested a lot of money in Green Tech.  Sounds good right.  Except when you find out that GE is counting on new Government restrictions to make money.  Now all of a sudden GE and NBC are all about the Green.  Yea green money.  How can you trust these fear profiteers.

  12. no official evidence????

ok by the simple fact you said no official evidenc im guessing you are not very bright in the are of physics, chemistry, and geography( no offence) you really need those to understand

this isnt some investigation to find out who the killer is, if you full want to understand study physics and chemistry. geography might help as well. until you study those we wont be able to explain the evidence.

  13. Many people do believe in it and others are doubting the theory, I believe that it will happen but we will probably act about it soon enough ("we" as in the human-race).

  14. Yes the global warming theory is real, however that does not necessarily mean that the theory itself is correct or foolproof.

Semantics aside, scientific theories can be amended and change over time.  Some ppl have argued that to avoid confusion among the "lay people", scientists should choose more appropriate vocabulary.

I firmly believe that human activites contribute to most of the factors attributed to global warming,  however, I dont believe that we can rule out other unknown factors.  I do believe that Earth has the ability mediate many traumas.  I do not believe that should pacify or make ppl become complacent with everything is going to be alright, simply that doomsayers do not promote solutions.

Recently a fellow in Hungary has gone over the math regarding global warming equations and discovered that the variables involving the atmosphere assume an infinite atmosphere,  this is untrue of course, substituting in a more real variable gives a much different picture from run away warming and greenhouse style effects.   Infact, he claims that when you redo the equations, you can see the periodic warming and cooling of the planet as inferred from all isotopic and esoteric sources; ie. ice cores, old growth trees and sedimentary deposits.

Food for thought in any event.

Even if we were not warming the planet,  I personally do not see the need to use oil/coal/nuclear/biofuel the way we do.

Solar, wind, wave, and geothermal could provide all the energy we need for quite a while and there we all know fusion is just 20 years away like it has been since the 50s.

    Holygoof

  15. If you're not sure then do some research of your own. Some good sources are Al Gore's movie and then you may want to get some actual facts to counter what's in his movie. I suggest "Cool It" by Bjorn Lomborg and "Unstoppable Global Warming : Once Every 1,500 Years" by Fred Singer, links to Amazon below. You won't get useful info from the media since they love any story that will scare readers and viewers and AGW is a doozy.

The planet was warming but now it's not, it may begin warming again but we may instead be in for much cooler temp. A book about that is "The Chilling Stars" by Henrik Svensmark. His theory is that sunspot activity on the sun indicates a change in it's magnetic field strength and the sun can either block or admit cosmic gamma radiation that interacts with the atmosphere to form clouds. When there is little activity it gets cooler and right now our solar cycle is almost completely absent so it may get colder than it has been in centuries.

Just reading summaries and reviews of the books is helpful but you should read them and make up your own mind. Don't be swayed by those who say the debate is over or that "all scientists" believe in warming. Most do but the consensus isn't what most claim it is, just that "There is very high confidence that the net effect of human activities since 1750 has been one of warming". And we're not even sure if the warming would be harmful, it wasn't bad the last times it got warmer after all.

Keep in mind that it's advocates of global warming theory that have chosen to ignore actual human-made records of CO2 levels that have shown it was much higher than today as recently as 1940 and that they've tried to revise the record to show that the Medieval Warm Period and Little Ice Age were not global events. To me that proves a strong political bias in everything that they do and say.
