  2. A proxy is a type of server or program that acts as a protal to the world wide web. It is possible that a sniffing program is located on a server or network set up with a proxy server. The main reason for a proxy is to control the flow of traffic and cache pages that are viewed so that the next user will have a faster respose time when they visit that same page or when you come back to the page later on.

If you are using proxy web servers to get around an Internet blocking program I would suggest not using them anymore. You see many hackers put up servers and steal network info so that they can take over a persons myspace or facebook site. The reason is both Myspace and Facebook are HUGH server farms that can help a hacker send out spam if they take over enough sites.
