Question:

Do psychologists want to help people or make money?

I am so sick at the system in America, back in April when I started going crazy I called psychologists and their first words were "do you have insurance" and of course I didnt and didnt want to pay the $100 an hour so that was that

But since then I have been going crazy and now I feel like I am a lost cause

I have been seeing some of these low cost therapists but not sure if it is helping

I dont know, will a psychologist help? Will a psychologist want to help me or just want to see a patient who will fill their schedule every week

Whatever we are all alone in this world especially this wonderful country

I wish I had moved to Canada a few years ago(at least then I could have gotten free health care and perhaps the psychologist would be more inclined to help me rather then fill their appointment book)

America is about capitalism, if you arent a capitalist you are screwed, I am sure the psychologists are no better then anyone else as they want to fill their schedule book and make sure their profits are coming in, better to help a lawyer who is cheating on his wife then a pathetic broken down person who is barely homeless

  1. They practice psychology as a profession and also for a living, hopefully it is a career that they chose because they like helping people but for heaven's sake they don't do it for free? I spent a lot of time studying to be registered dietitian and love the work but I must earn a living and I'm not doing it for free. Would you do your job for free?

Get real, I'm sorry you can't afford counseling, why not get a job where you get health benefits and it would be partly covered.

  2. I think alot of them want to help people, but it is a business and they have bills too.

  3. i think they are nosy & like knowing everything about peoples life & problems.

cause they dont have a life.

  4. I had sorta the same problem ...I had insurance...BUT..I was only covered for so many hours and had to pay a 30 dollar deductable. The shrink I thought was okay at first, but when I called for help ( I was having an episode )  they wanted to charge me 10 dollars just to put me through!! I said F*(k it and didn't go back. Sadly, I think it's mostly about the money.Which is wrong for that profession.

  5. A lot of pyschologists are just interested in the human psyché. I don't know where you might find a psychologist who would take you on pro bono. I'm so sorry about it. All I can suggest is to get insurance.

  6. They paid alot of money to get the certified title of a Psychologists, so to answer your question, when you consider all the knowledge they have, and the bills they have to pay for from college, i dont think thats much. I'm sorry that you couldn't afford health insurance, but if you cant afford health insurance what would make you think you could afford someone who went to college to HELP people. Its not really that much when you think about it. If you think its too much then do go, simple.

Its alot of information they have to know. Keep that in mind.

  7. Well I'm studying Psychology and Lord willing I will get my PH.D.

I love analyzing and observing and I'm personally wanting to become a marriage and family therapist because I want to help in every way that I can. I want to make a difference, see change, see them grow. I can't speak for every psychologist, but the truth is I feel you have to be called to work with people and wise to give them advice. I don't think there's enough money you could give someone to spend their life listening to people's problems, you really need to have a passion.

If they were in it for the money, that's pretty lame. I mean you have to give up 8-9 years of your life just to get a license. You spend so much in Grad school and your time.

I know that I'm doing it for the people.

  8. All of the mental health professionals I have ever known want to help people. So too the physicians I know. They also want to pay their own bills and so need to charge for their services.

I'm sure that there are practitioners in any field who hate their jobs and are just in it for the money. But needing to charge for their time doesn't mean that someone isn't interested in helping you.

It sounds like you are very troubled and are also incapable of paying for your own treatment. I would bet that if you contacted one of these psychologists and said: "I need psychological help but cannot afford it, who do you recommend that I call that can provide the help I need for free" not only would you get a useful answer but you'd also see that these folks are interested in helping you find the care you need even though they won't make any money from it.

The reason that I suggest you contact a local mental health practitioner is that free care is handled differently from state to state and even from town to town. Getting a local referral is better than I can provide for you.

  9. Most of them are not in it for the money. What is your issue anyway? Maybe you're just whiny? Get some friends dude.

  10. would you be upset if you went to the hospital and the first thing they asked is "do you have insurance?" Same thing my dear. It is the system in america, it is either take it or leave it. However, there are a lot of churches that have free counselling so you can choose that route. I am not sure what you do but but why not try telling your employer you would like to start working for them for free and still do all the hard work but not get paid. Then let me know how that goes for you.

  11. strange you should ask this question before i was in therapy i would have said yes...keep it going as long as possible.

however after being in therapy for the past year and learnt what i have i would say quiet the opposite........this week my psychologist said to me the sessions are in my control........it's down to me as and when it's right for the sessions to finish and then it is quite a long process.....

I'm from the UK and my personal health insurance covers my costs......well for £1500.00 which i guess is the same as $3000.00

  12. both

  13. both. its their job so of course they want to make money. but they chose the job so they want to help people...while making money lol
