It all depends on if the horse is fortunate enough to be in the care of a trainer that does things properly. I have seen trainers that dont do ANY legwork. Trainers whose horses live in semi-filthy stalls. Trainers who only cool horses out for less than 15 mins after a gallop and right back in the stall they go because trainer is in a hurry. Trainers whose horses are way overdue to be shod. Trainers who over trainer and the horses are under weight and dehydrated. Etc etc etc

and lots of hard work both for the trainer and the horse. When you start training the horse is usually only on light food. Once he knows the routine and you want to pick up the pace he is put on a special diet with lots of grain---hot food he is also given lots of extra vitamins quite often by injection and lots of iron. Most trainers have their own  ideas of the food and extras needed. After each work out he is washed down and cleaned. His feet are given special treatment as his shoes have to be applied very carefully so that he does not hit his feet. I don't know about massage but certainly lots of brushing. Every so often he is put out to pasture for a respite as training is very intensive. There are lots of books written on the various methods as lots of different ideas. Before training is even commenced a complete veterinary check is made for heart and lung capabilities so that time and money is not wasted.

they sure do. just like humans would if the were athletes.. a race horse is treated like a footy player or any other athlete really. they need to get well nourished in order to stay strong and healthy...
