  1. Depends. Steam radiators can blow if the safety valve gets disabled AND the system overpressures. But it'd have to be a very old system.

  2. If you are hearing that some radiators have blown up, it could be so. Steam pressure in a radiator can cause an explosion.

When the heating system is putt to a test as in a cold snap, and the safety valve is starting to lose pressure some idiots will 'adjust' the relief valve to a higher pressure without due care and attention, and exceed the strength of some of the rads.

Before adding to the pressure, be aware that engineers have already determined the safe temperature. If you are not qualified, you are only qualified to release pressure, not increase it.

  3. no, its just warm oil

  4. if its'old it use's water from a boiler in the basement but no they don't blow up if you have a problem call your landlord

  5. What sort of radiator is it? If it is water heated then there is most likely a pressure release valve in the system which releases excess pressure before the radiator blows up.
