Question:

Do radio stations that play Steely Dan go belly up?

That's what I heard a DJ declare on a non-commercial radio station I listen to regularly. He is a pretty knowledgable DJ with twenty years' experience in radio, and he said that it was common knowledge among himself and his fellow DJ's that stations that regularly played anything by Steely Dan, including the hits, would eventually lose listeners and go off the air. I was pretty surprised to hear this, considering how popular Steely Dan remains to this day, still drawing sell-out crowds to its shows. I ask this question as a fan of Steely Dan, and while I can respect the fact that some radio personalities and listeners may not like the Dan, I can't figure out how the band can be so toxic as to drive away listeners in such high numbers. Can anyone confirm or deny this statement, especially anyone with experience working in radio?

  1. no, the dj quite clearly does not like the artist in question

  2. No, he was kidding. Simple as that.

If there was anything serious in his remark it may be that album-based oldies stations are not as popular as they once were - but even that's a stretch. I'm sure his remarks were tongue-in-cheek.
