Do radioactive areas really make that crackling sound?

can you hear it or is it just something they add when they show it on tv?

  1. actually i never went to such an area . but can say such substances make sound only when they react .


  2. Radioactive places don't make sounds, in fact your ears are not sensitive enough to pick up the sound those particles shooting straight through you make.

    What does make that crackling sound is the device that is used to detect radiation. It essentially magnifies the sound the particles make, so that your ear can hear them, in addition to that there is also usually a gauge that visually shows you the levels of radiation.

    That is the sound of a Geiger-Muller Tube or GM Tube for short.

    It is used survey radiation fields.  Not all of them make clicking sounds when they count.  However, if the counts are high enough you can hear a slight hissing sound in the GM Tube.  It has to do with the air ionizing and the bias voltage applied to the tube.
