Question:

Do redheads really require more anesthesia?

I know it sounds crazy but someone told me that female redheads need to have more anesthesia compared to other hair colors.

The thing is I have reddish hair (auburn indoors, and dark red in the sunlight) I'm not sure if they are related but when I go to the dentist for fillings I need to have a lot of Novocaine (the dentist says I need more than the "normal" person)

Does this make sense or is it just a myth?

  1. Myth

  2. The long-time supposition that redheads were harder to put under by anesthesia may prove to be a medical fact. A small study has found that redheads need 20% more anesthetic before surgery than people with other hair colors. The reason may have to do with the hormone that causes red hair and how it reacts with pain sensitivity in the brain.

  3. No, how much anesthesia you will get is based on persons weight.

  4. I don't know about that but Red Headed women make my heart pound so bad I could use a sedative to calm down.
