Blu Ray is the next generation format for movies and games. This question is like asking, does my vhs player play dvds?....

You need a blu ray player or playstation 3 to play blu rays. The other next gen format is HD DVD's. You would need a hd dvd player to play those. I suggest Blu rays myself.

If that was the case, then why would Blu-ray players cost over $300? No, it will not work.

No, they do not.   you would need a blue ray DVD player.  Depending on your other interests, a SONY PS3 might make sense, as they are down to $400, include a blu ray player, as well as being an excellent game console.
