Question:

Do religious types have difficulty admitting they don't know everything about everything?

Over the past few months I have concluded that many religious posts throw out random facts and the like, to try and find some golden key that religions are correct and that non religious people are all wrong.

Many of these little nuggets of information often can be debunked with a grade school science class education. Now some ar harder to debunk, but for the most part they are very simple.

I notice that this angers the religious mind to no end. That they cannot admit they are wrong? And on the flip side the atheist mind has dedicated a life to being proven wrong.

isn't that the whole point of science. To grow and admit you are wrong, to learn from mistakes. Isn't that what progress actually is, admitting you were wrong. is it just me or does this seem to be the very core of this sort of arguement?

  1. i will be the first to admit there are many things i do not know.  I do know that Jesus died for my sins and i do believe in the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

  2. I don't know that I consider myself a religious type - although I belong to a religion and attend church regularly.

But to answer your question - I have no proof that I am right and am always open to the opportunity to learn more. (or learn something different if it works.)

At the same time, I don't feel as though my beliefs need proof. They are beliefs - I don't state them as facts - they are spiritual experiences. They apply to me - not to others.

I don't believe that non-religious people are wrong. I think they have their beliefs which are their business.

I do have to disagree with you on one particular point: SOME Atheists dedicate themselves to being proven wrong. Some of the Atheists I've met (and some on this forum) don't really search out science, they aren't active in proving or disproving anything. They too can be as lazy as the cut and paste Theists we often see here.

  3. A man that knows anything, knows he knows nothing.

  4. I am not sure if the religionist doesn't know everything about everything, but many do have difficulty in reconciling facts with beliefs.

This is not to trod down upon a religious person, either.  They have a framework and belief system that is biased in such a manner as to be wary to new arguments and facts.  When these things don't jive the belief system is upset.  Those with critical minds will incorporate what they know to be true with the truth.  Those with curious minds will look into what they have found with some passion.  Those with lazy minds will ignore what they know to be true and supplant it with whatever their belief system allows.  Remember, many religionists already have the thinking done for them.

  5. I don't think I'm the "religious type" you're referring to, but I do consider myself religious. For me it's just the opposite of what you say. The more I  learn, the more I realize that I have yet to learn. This to me is how we grow and become more wise - the truly wise know that there is much more to learn than what they already know.

  6. I know this question will get lots of irrational answers with maybe one or two logical ones. I don't know why someone in search of truth has made a pit stop at R&S.

  7. No, because that is impossible with humans. Only God knows everything.

  8. many have as much trouble admitting that as many atheists have admitting that not everything is knowable, measurable, or discoverable to us, no matter how big our heads evolve.

  9. Evolution is not a "fact" it's a theory. I can still consider this theory with the understanding that God is the author of evolution. Science is simply what God allows to be revealed. Stop using "evolution" to disprove God and focus it back to science. And then the faithful will consider the results of your findings.

  10. I think we are all learning. Together on some level. I have already learned much.

I do not ever proclaim to know anything, but as I seek to learn truths, I meet many along the way with more information I have!

    Shalom

  11. I don't know much about everything, but what I do know, I know very well

  12. How is it that some who seem to prefer the science theory find that scientists must be infallible.always have the answers and are always forthright. Scientists find some fossil (whatever) say it is this and that and it is believed. That is having faith too..unless you can personally test the item yourself. So who can judge...This is my conclusion from a lifetime of studying.

  13. LOL to be 100% honest with you I have found nothing but the opposite to be true. As a person of faith and religion I have to say its very, very easy for me to say i absolutely make no claims to know everything about everything.

But atheist here seem pretty certain they have the answers to everything.

There is no God ! How do you know? There just isn't blah blah blah...

It far from angers me either. They are as welcome to my opinion as I am mine. Difference being I dont tell them they are wrong etc but they seem to take inerrant pleasure in calling me all the names under the sun.

Prove me wrong then if atheists have dedicated a life to being proved wrong why can I not be afforded the same courtesy? Little hypocritical no?

What is it I have to admit I was wrong about? Where is the scientific proof that there is no God? Please show it if you have it I would be more than happy to peruse it.....

There are people of faith and religion who are scientist you know lol its not an atheist occupation. I know of a muslim woman who is a devoted scientist smarter than most so is her whole life and oxymoron or maybe you are the one who has to admit you dont know everything about everything?

    Peace to you...

Yep Muslim woman scientist, yes they do exist.....http://www.islamchannel.tv/ViewProfiles....

  14. some believers believe in lies and illogical nonsense and are bigoted, they will never admit to being wrong or take on true/correct facts

some will never admit to being wrong if they are being stupid

  15. yeah... religious minds do think they are right about everything. especially christians... and it is hard to convince them otherwise because they know that the more crazy to the rest of the world it sounds, the more true it must be. That is really a sorry way of looking at things because it leads many to some cult-like beliefs that hurt people psychologically and sometimes physically. Science by definition is against religion, however if one was to take a philosophical stand point on both, then science and religion can live in the same mind together peacefully.

  16. I don't think that's what's going on. My feeling is that the people you're talking about ONLY read the 'bible'. I'm familiar with some people who are homeschooling their children, and in opposition to the state guidelines, are using ONLY the 'bible' in these home school classes. Young people who come up this way haven't been exposed to different ideas, so they are determined that what they have learned is right and everything else is wrong.
