I heard that they never did. I find that hard to believe because they are always wanting experience for servers.

  1. I've never heard of anyone calling previous employers and I've worked in restaurants for a long time. There is such high turnover in the industry so they know if you can't cut it, they can replace you right away without any significant lost investment. Which is probably why don't really check references very carefully. However, it's very obvious on someone's first day at a new restaurant (at least as a server) whether they have experience or not in the industry, so I wouldn't lie about it.

  2. no not really, its just to see what businesses you've worked for. Like say your applying for a fancy restaurant as a cook. and your only reference is mcdonalds as a cook. the odds are that they will not hire you because they will feel that you wouldn't be able to meet the standards of the facility. also they are just nosy b******s

  3. I work for a large seafood chain and they do verify past employment.
