The ones that are better off do.  They may not fully understand it, but they now they are not the same as the other kids.  The students who do not achieve the problem-solving capabilities of a five year old kid, probably are not aware of it ever.  They may see other kids doing stuff they want to do, but that's it.  Momma, daddy, or teacher tells them no and that's where it stops.

Some do and it is very frustrating for them. I have a girl in my class who wants to be "cool" but no "cool" kid will accept her. She gets very frustrated and wants to know when she will get "smart" as she says.

We have to try and point out things she can do that make her special, but it's hard.

My son was raised to know that he has Down Syndrome and is mentally retarded he understands that it was a choice God made on his behalf.  Most of his class mates, and team mates on Special Olympic teams seem not to have ever been told.
