  1. normal they wont as a pet

  2. yes they do. this website tells you all about it: http://russiantortoise.net/hibernation_j...

  3. Many biologists believe that Russian tortoises live longer if they are hibernated. Mine hibernate whether I want them to or not and remain inactive for several months.

  4. You are absolutely correct.

The can die if you don't do it correctly, and NO they don't need to hybernate if they're kept indoors with the correct lights and heaters.

It's actually better for caged pets to skip hybernation all together.

(If you have a pond turtle that lives outdoors all year 'round, that's different.  He's "in tune" with the natural world around him and knows how to hybernate.  No human interference needed)

I could go into the benefits of hybernation prevention if you want.  Let me know.  (It's a little long and involved)

  5. tortoises do not have to hibernate but i do hibernate mine you are right when done incorrectly they can die but hibernation is not that scary once you have all the information you need here is a site that has lots of information on how to hibernate your tortoise and how to make it safe for them http://www.tortoisetrust.org/articles/sa... there is lots of debate on whether to hibernate a tortoise or not but in the wild they would sleep through the colder months, have a good look at the site and you can decide whether you want to hibernate your tortoise or not, the first winter mine slept i was a nervous wreck i thought i would find a dead tortoise but after 30 years of letting my tortoise hibernate i am more relaxed, as long as you make sure your tortoise has stored enough to get it through and you check it while it is sleeping all is usually ok, best of luck honey
