Question:

Do russian tortoises make any general noises?

I saw this video on Youtube--monster surfin--that had a tortoise (not sure if it was a russian) on a mini surfboard, and it was slowly pushing itself in a circle, kept opening and closing its mouth and seemed to be making these freaking adorable whimpering noises. So I was curious to know if tortoises (particularly russian tortoises, since I might be getting one) make noises. Not if they're sick, just in general. (And I'm not asking because I was a noiseless pet, I don't mind if it makes noises; I just want to know.)

  1. to add to the good answers you have already, here is a link to hear mating sounds.

  2. Tortoises rarely make noise. Some common noises they do make include:

    - occasional jaw clicks

    - startled hissed when they pull their heads in

    - hisses when angry, scared, or getting ready to attack

    - a specific noise for mating or combat challenge. These can range from grunts, to clucks, and more.

    - noises during egg laying

They don't whimper, and opening/closing mouth is just breathing, but usually shows that the animal is stressed.

  3. im sure all turtles/tortoises make some kinda noise my baby turtle even makes a lil sqeak every now and then :)

  4. Male tortoises will frequently "mate" with inanimate objects and I suspect that may have been what was going on in the video. The males can be quite vocal during mating, grunting with an open mouth and also making a whimpering or sighing  type sound that matches your description.

  5. tortoises only really make a noise if you startle them and this is a sounds similar to a hiss but it is just where they are pulling their heads and legs in quick to protect them selves, they don't have lungs like we do they breathe by moving their legs in and out and pump their lungs with their leg movements, they do make a grunting sound when they mate or the male is trying to attract a mate, but not whimpering sounds, they are a quiet reptile, and apart from the occasional clunk on the ground with their shell you will not really hear them, which is sometimes nice to have such a quiet pet, hope this helps best of luck.
