The keel of a sailboat is the counterweight that hangs below the hull to help control the heel or tipping of the boat caused by the wind forces on the sail and to help give directional stability. Unless the boat is sailing dead-down-wind (DDW), it will always have some degree of heeling. Tacking a sailboat is changing the direction of the boat such that the wind direction in relation to the boat changes sides. The boat will heel to the other side after a tack.
