Hi,

I am thinking of getting a tom tom or something similar. I want to know if they can detect actual speed cameras or is it just pre programmed cameras that never move that thy detect.

So what i mean is if a police car is hiding behind a bush on the otorway will a specific model sat nav pick up this camera or is it just pre programmed cameras hey detect?

I know you can get regular updates of speed cameras but once again are these just the unmanned ones?

  1. Tom Toms and any other camera warning device can only tell you where a speed camera is by its geographical location.

The device usually cannot even differentiate which way the camera is facing and on motorways you will possibly get a warning but the camera is probably on an adjacent road.

The Roadpilot MicroGo is an example of a specific camera warning device whose information includes the type of camera, & direction that the camera is taking images so you will not necessarily get a false reading.

If you had a device that could detect speed cameras (Police cars, Vans etc) then you would be driving illegally as detectors are forbidden by law.

  2. just unmanned but get one anyway great for taking you around traffic jams you wouldnt otherwise know about.

  3. Sat Navs do not "detect" anything. They respond to navigation signals sent from the GPS satellite system.

The only way they know about fixed speed cameras is if the camera location has been entered into its road map. This information may be out of date. They cannot tell you about movable speed cameras at all.

If you use a radar detector then that will not help you to avoid being caught. This is because by the time the detector has picked up the signal from the camera - the camera has already "seen" you. Think about it, it's logical.

  4. They only have details of where the "known" ones are, and that depends on someone loading the details into the database and you downloading the update.  Obviously, therefore, they cannot tell you about portable or temporary cameras.

Regarding radar etc. detectors, you might find this useful :- http://www.radardetectors.co.uk/

  5. They don't "detect" speed cameras.

They have a list of where the known ones are.

  6. >>>  I know you can get regular updates of speed cameras

You are mistaken.  They do NOT speeding aide like radar detectors.  Some of them have traffic updates, but that about it.

    Good Luck...

  7. yes, you get the one with the little binoclures on the front and then the little demon inside can see right up the road and notice if there is a 'orrible little policeman hiding in the bushes trying to catch you speeding down the road looking at your sat nav unit!

  8. If you keep to the national speed limits then you don't need to worry about the location of speed guns, camera's etc...

But some to have within thatm the location of static camera's though.
