Question:

Do schools in USA have swimming pools?

I live in Australia and will be moving to California I think in August this year. I am currently in Grade 8 over here. I think I will repeat it as I have already skipped 2 grades and I would be much better prepared for high school if I first went to Grade 8 in USA. However, I am also a competitive swimmer and I have been swimming all my life and it is my passion. I was just wondering if junior high schools and high schools in USA have swimming pools, and what should I do if they don't as I have heard from a friend of mine that they don't. Thanks.

  1. Yeah usually they have swimming pools on the west coast. If they don't have a pool at the school you're going to then try to join a club team or a YMCA team.

  2. In terms of public (free) schools, some high schools do, but almost all middle schools do not.  Some private schools may have pools.

  3. Some schools do and some don't.  But, there are swim clubs all over the country.

In 8th grade, in some school systems, you can petition to be allowed to join the varsity team - there would be physical tests you would need to pass.  Since you're younger than most 8th graders here, you would probably not qualify, however.

To find a swim club in the area to which you will be moving, go to usaswimming.org.  In a swim club, you pay a fee to join and will have practices once or twice per week.  You may also participate in competitions between clubs.

Also, don't assume that would need to repeat 8th grade.  If you can find out what the curriculum for 8th grade is in the school district you're looking at, you can compare it with what you have already done.  Private schools may be more accommodating than public schools.  One big issue would be your maturity level, since there are big differences in the middle-school-to-high school age span.

    Good luck to you.

  4. The high schools in Southern California have pools and swim teams.  8th grade is considered junior high and those schools do not have swimming pools.  You will need to wait a year to join your school team, but you should be able to find a local team to join until then.  Welcome to America, mate!

  5. most schools have pools...however, there is a program called USA swimming all over the country and if the school ur going to doesnt have a pool or a team, it shouldnt be too difficult to find a local USA swimming club
