  4. It really depends on the drug and the method of dosage.

    The longest that I can think of (for typical side effects anyway) is the Depo Provera birth control shot. It is effective for 3 months, which means 3 months of side effects. And once people stop getting the shots, they have months of more side effects when their body is readjusting.

    For your typical side effects of oral medications, I don't think they will last more than a couple days after you stop taking the medication. It will take much longer if you have developed a dependency (esp. with pain medications and other medicines dealing with brain chemistry).

    But really, you need to read the patient information that came with your prescription. There are some side effects that are very dangerous and require emergency medical attention.
