My daughter is 9 and gets very annoyed when she calls her dad and he is at the bar. She called him last night at 9 a.m. and he told her he was eating with his friend. He said the name of the bar and she knows it is a bar. She seemed sad and when I talked to her she commented about how she doesn't like that he is always at the bar. I think he goes there a minimum of three times a week, "just to eat." I feel like talking to him about it but then it's not my business even though it bothers her. Someone at work told me that is just what single guys do. Is that true? Then what do single women do? I work, take care of my house and daughter - not much time to go to bars. Maybe I'm not the norm?

  1. Some do.

  2. no its the norm. they go out and act like kids....we stay home and be adults! true you cant say anything to him. but maybe tell him she is 9 stop explaining where he is and just say im out with friends because she is taking it the wrong way! at 9 thats none of her business as long as he is being a father to her.

  3. Hi Mia:

No, this is not normal. Especially if your 9 year old daughter is bringing it to your attention.

Even though you do not feel it's your place, you do have a right to protect the best interest of your child.

Have a talk with your ex and let him know that she is well aware of his frequent visits. Even though he may just have a bite to eat, at 9 years old, she probably is convinced he is drinking. Let him know how this is making her feel.

Yes, it is his business to do what he wants BUT not at the risk of causing concern to his daughter.

I too am the primary caretaker in my household and have little time for the bar scene.

    Hang in there!
