Question:

Do sleeper trains still exist in the UK?

If so, where, and how much does a bunk cost- how many to a room? Can you get single rooms? Are there any other facilities avaliable save the usual buffet?

Secondly, what is the most ostentatious train in the world, e.g., the most well decorated or with the most amenities, that is avaliable to the general public?

Thanks!

  1. No i don't think so dude

  2. There are 3 trains which run Sunday to Friday (i.e. not Saturday night).

    They are:

London Paddington to Penzance and Penzance to London Paddington (First Great Western Night Riviera)

London Euston to Edinburgh/Glasgow and Edinburgh/Glasgow to London Euston (First ScotRail Lowland Caledonian sleeper)

London Euston  to Fort William/Inverness/Aberdeen and Fort William/Inverness/Aberdeen to London Euston (First ScotRail Highland Caledonian sleeper).

Prices vary a lot on the sleeper trains. You can get a berth (bed) for £19 each way (Scotrail) if you book well in advance. Otherwise prices can range up to around £120 for a single berth (standard class).

You cannot book online for the London to Penzance service and will need to go to a staffed railway station, (the bigger stations as your local station will not have a clue about booking sleepers).

  3. not sure, but you've just revolked some great memories of trips from Prteston up to Pitlochory  when I was Kid by that question.

On a different note I know there are trips round scotland on sleeper trains - The Scotsman, travelling alond the west coast line has sleeper cars but this is soley for tourists

  4. there's the Caledonian tickets start at around £50 one way.

  5. Yes they do but they are not that cheap.

There are trains from London to Penzance operated by First Great Western and from London to Scotland by Scotrail.

Check the web sites for details.

There is now a luxury version of the Trans Siberian Express (Golden Eagle) which is likened to travelling in a 5 star hotel.

  6. There are sleeper services run by First Great Western from London Paddington to Penzance, and by First Scotrail from London Euston to Edinburgh, Glasgow and further north.

Berths cost from £25 for shared occupancy (two beds to a berth), and much more for single occupancy, in addition to the normal travel ticket required for the journey being made.

Apart from the usual buffet, there is a breakfast service which comprises a microwaved meal of something resembling a cooked breakfast. It would be much cheaper and far more comfortable to book a hotel room and travel during the day when journey times are shorter and cheaper fares are available in advance.

Secondly, there are many charter trains available to the public, which can be pre-booked for luxurious journeys throughout the UK and beyond.

  7. yes

  8. You can def still get sleepers between London and Scotland.  Here is a link.  I have not done this so don't know what the trains are like, but I really want to:

    http://www.firstgroup.com/scotrail/conte...

This link will take you the most famous British luxury train website.  Again, I've not travelled on one, but saw the Pullman one and it looked fantastic from the outside.  Very luxurious!!

  9. Yes, from London to various destinations in Scotland. Also a sleeper service is available to Penzance from London. It's 2 to a room and the cost is variable. If you want a room to yourself there is a supplement and if you want a little extra you can book a first class cabin.

The Orient Express is probably the most famous for luxury and sheer romance of the railway. But many private tour operators offer luxury trips on specially chartered trains and they are not specifically aimed at rail enthusiasts. These trips are offered all around the globe with some notable trips in the UK.

  10. Yeah there is a caledonian sleeper train which runs from fort william (i think) to london.

    The website is scotrail.co.uk

  11. I would say that the Orient Express [starts from London and goes to Paris] is probably the most opulent train in the world.

As for sleeper trains they "used" to run from Plymouth to London, but honestly not been in the UK for a while so not sure.

  12. Yes there are, but not many though
