Do sleepwalkers require more sleep?

Do sleepwalkers (and/or people who sit up and move around while asleep) require more sleep? I know someone who is young who does this and they seem to need more sleep than "normal" so I just wondered if people who do this require more sleep since they are more active than people who never sleep walk or move around acting out their dreams.(It would make sense to me but I wasn't sure.) Let's keep the answers for people ages 6-11...or if you did this when you were these ages and remember if you slept more as a child and would like to comment. I was told the doctor has not been too concerned about the sleep walking but I've just wondering about the rest quality lately....thanks!!!

  1. my friend did and does this, he got into fights in his sleep when he was around others.

Obviously, if you're fighting in your sleep you're not resting. So yes they would need more sleep, but they might not necessarily be tired when they wake up, or may be unrested no matter how much "sleep" they get.

People usually only sleep walk when provoked in some way so the best thing is for them to sleep undisturbed.

  2. I know my son is 5 1/2 years old and a sleepwalker and he moves around a lot and he only requires 8 hrs but my son who doesn't sleep walk requires 12 hrs.  Me I slept walk too when i was younger and I never felt like i got enough sleep and the Dr said it is because when you sleep walk you are using so much energy while asleep that your still tired when you wakeup.  Another thing that makes you still tired is sleep apnea.

  3. I think they just get more exercise than the rest of us by moving around while they're sleeping.  Just call it multi-tasking.

  4. Sleepwalking occurs during the deeper stages of sleep, so even though a child or person is walking around or moving, they are in a deep quality sleep.

It is possible to sleepwalk during light stages of sleep, but more likely to happen in the deep stages.

On average, most people move, turn over, kick, etc. during the night. I do not think that the sleepwalking would cause a need for more rest.

But one of the reasons a child can sleepwalk is because they did not have enough rest BEFORE they went to sleep (in the days prior), so this may cause them to stay  the deeper stages of sleep longer and therefore give a higher chance of sleepwalking.

You may want to think about having the child take a 30-45 minute nap during the day to reduce stress, and help with sleep at night. There are studies showing that a nap in the day can help children (and adults) fall asleep easier and get better quality sleep at night.
