  1. Emergency slides are required only when the exit in question sits more than 4'8" above the ground.  If the exit is lower than this value, slides are not required.

Look at a CRJ-900.  It actually slopes down towards the front when it is on the ground.  That is because if the aircraft were flat,  main cabin and service doorsat the front of the plane would be above 4'8" and slides would be required.  In order to get around this requirement, the nose of the aircraft actually sits lower than it looks like it should.

  2. Only if the door sill height is over 72 inches.  That is a regulatory requirement.

Even large planes won't have a slide if close enough to the ground.  For example the 737 overwing emergency exits open onto the wing, and you have to clamber down from the back of the wing, which is less than 72 inches up.

For regional jets, the door is often an airstair, so no slide either.

  3. little planes such as cessnas? no i would just jump. if your plane is on fire, and you want to wait 10 seconds for a chutt to inflate, why bother when it only takes 3 to unbuckle and jump out about 3 feet lol.

  4. I think so.

  5. Generally not.  Most corporate sized planes do not sit high enough off the ground to have slides.  They also don't hold enough people to make expeditious evacuation as much of an issue.  You can easily get 14 people down stairs in less than 90 seconds.  That's not the case with 150 people, so they use slides instead.

  6. no there only 2 or 3 feet off the ground lol

  7. Don't know 'bout small jets but do know Cessna182 doesn't. So close to ground, wouldn't make sense.

  8. If by "little planes" you mean something like a Cessna 172 or 182, then no. they dont have emergency slides. Im not sure if slightly bigger aircraft like CRJs have slides.

  9. The need for an emergency exit slide on a transport airplane depends on the height of the exit of the airplane to the ground.

An aircraft like the EMB-145 does not because someone (during the aircraft getting certified) deemed that people can jump from that height without high risk of injury.  Jumping from a 737 or larger on the other hand would probably kill you or at least break a lot of bones which would not be a good thing if you are trying to evacuate an aircraft .

  10. CG is right, the only need for a slide is to get passengers safely on the ground from a cabin height that is too far to jump.  General Aviation aircraft don't have slides.
