Question:

Do smokers have an unconscious death wish?

I'm not trying to offend anyone. And, I'm a smoker anyway.

But, do you think we have some inherent disrespect for our bodies, knowing how bad it is for us? I've noticed smoking isn't the only way I'm careless with my health.

I quit for a few days, and then think "I'm going to die anyway" and start up again.

How can I love and respect myself more?

  1. They say it takes ten years off your life. That's the wheelchair colostomy bag years that I'm not going to miss.

  2. I don't think it's a death wish.  If it was I think a person would do something that didn't take years to develop and might not even kill you.  My father has been smoking for 62 years and has no problems with that, his lungs even look like non-smokers.  So considering it's not a certain death, there are other reasons you may smoke.  There may be other issues, just as you are asking how to improve your love and respect for yourself.  Smoking is probably something you fall back on, kind of a comfort.

The way to love and respect yourself is to see the good in yourself.  Every morning look in the mirror and tell yourself that you are a wonderful person, with people who love you and you are going to go out and do good that day.  Eventually you will start to have a better attitude and it will spread to all areas of your life.  Things will start to fall into place.  Another great thing to do is spend time with people who love you.  When I'm down I go visit my hometown.  There is always someone there who is happy to see me and glad I am around.  It makes me feel wonderful.

  3. Yes actually smokers do have a little disrespect for their bodies.

I am a smoker, I am trying to quit.

Everyone that smokes kinda wants to quit, but then they just say. I am going to die anyway That's the usual.

Maybe try an addiction clinic or therapy.

    Good Luck Hunn.

  4. Most likely smokers have a death wish but it is only human to wanna distroy ourselfs.

You may need some thearopy alongside quitting smoking, think of smoking like codependency.

  5. i think it's just indifference. and maybe because the death isn't caused by it right away you don't actually care about it or think a lot that it might happen.

  6. Smokers are more fun ...we are the risk takers...lol

  7. ALOT of people smoke because of stress. Try meditation, eating hard candy when you get a craving, and reducing the stress in your life.

  8. it's not that people have a death wish- they simply are addicted to the nicotine. everyone does things that are bad for themselves. Overeat, don't exercise, drink too much etc, etc, etc. Yes, were all going to die anyways. I respect my body and love myself, too, but that doesn't stop me from loving to eat chips and salsa and have an enormous margarita to wash it all down. quit being hard on yourself. when you're ready to quit, you'll quit

  9. Just because people smoke, doesn't mean they are going to die early.

My grandparents are the perfect example.

They are 87 and 83, and been smoking for over 60 years, with no signs of quitting. If anything, if they were to quit now, they would probably die.

  10. eat right excercise die anyway.

everybody has to die of something

    why not enjoy it?

  11. That's like saying "All fat people want to die".....because we all know obesity kills, right?  In my non-medical, unprofessional, self-indulged opinion - people do what they want, what's easy, and generally what feels good, not generally what deemed "right" or "healthy" by others.

It doesn't seem like a lack of self respect, but more of a lack of self control (if not smoking is the goal).    Personally, I don't base my self control on smoking, if it is what I want to do, I fully accept the consequences and understand that I am doing it because I want to, I can, and I don't feel guilty.  I am in control.
